Rich Hill, Missouri was named in 1871 by C.W. Ratekin and used the slogan “The Town That Coal Built”. The town experienced a rapid population expansion during the late 1800’s until mining efforts began to decline and eventually ended in 1906. Later the mining effort was renewed by Peabody Energy. In the 1950s KLM Telephone Company, a rural telephone company, and its owner, American Broadband, is based in Rich Hill. David K. Bennett, Dean Talbot, Sonny Petty, Homer Swope, Kenny Kerns, Raleigh Masur and Gary Ramage worked for KLM telephone co. and helped install the first dial telephone system and equipment in the town of Rich Hill, Missouri.
