City Utilities’ SpringNet Sells Underground Data Center to Bluebird Network

SpringNet Underground now Bluebird Underground

SPRINGFIELD, MO – December 5, 2014 – SpringNet, a division of City Utilities of Springfield, Missouri, and Bluebird Network, LLC, a Columbia, Mo. regional telecommunications company, announce the sale of SpringNet Underground to Bluebird Network. The underground data center located in Northwest Springfield will now be Bluebird Underground, LLC.

Michael Morey, President and CEO of Bluebird Network stated, “The favorable reputations of our organizations provide the foundation required to quickly earn the trust of existing and new customers. It’s this same commitment which will foster a positive transition and provide operational confidence going forward.” Mr. Morey also commented, “Bluebird understands the importance of expanding the data center from its existing 56,000 square feet, and has pro-actively created its next step preparations for the data center build-out, which will result in new growth and employees in the data center.” The addition of the data center complements Bluebird’s existing service portfolio.

“SpringNet Underground has been a successful business venture for SpringNet and City Utilities. However, when faced with the need for expansion and weighing the cost options, we feel that this divestiture is the best option for the utility and our customers,” says Scott Miller, General Manager – City Utilities of Springfield. “During the transition phase, our staff will work with Bluebird Network to support the customers as we have since SpringNet Underground was developed and want to remind our customers that this only impacts the data colocation center of SpringNet, and not the overall broadband business.”

Bluebird Network, headquartered in Columbia, Missouri, was formed by integrating three companies; Bluebird Media, Missouri Network Alliance (MNA, est. 1999) and Illinois Network Alliance (INA, est. 2009), and with the purchase of the SpringNet Underground Data Center, now includes Bluebird Underground. This integration creates a leading Midwest telecommunications company that provides 6,000 route miles of high-speed broadband and fiber optic connections to Midwest communities and a data center in Springfield, Mo. Bluebird fiber network has over 100 Points of Presence (POP) sites spanning the Midwest including the major cities of Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, Tulsa, Omaha, Des Moines, and Memphis. Bluebird has a national reach through its partner, INDATEL Group, which connects the fiber-optic networks of independent telephone companies across the United States.
